Question (Q): What has been your favorite Curler Outreach webinar?
Katie Feldman (KF): I loved the ones by Stephanie Thompson (Purchase a recording HERE). The social media ones with Charlotte were also very helpful! And anything about a bonspiel.
Q: Do you have any special roles at your club, or leagues/spiels you regularly enjoy?
KF: I've been the president of Wine Country Curling Club (WCCC) since July of 2016. I've also organized the Crush Bonspiel (Labor Day Weekend) five times, the Barrel Bonspiel (last weekend of March) three times, and served on the committee for the MoPac (Mountain Pacific Curling Association) 5 & Under (late April) twice. But what I enjoy most of all though is traveling to ALL the bonspiels! When there wasn’t a pandemic, I went bonspieling (with either my son, my husband or both) once every month.
Q: How did you find curling? What was attractive about it?
KF: My husband saw it on TV in 1998 but we didn’t curl until 2014! WCCC hosted two radio DJs here in Sacramento and they aired their show during my commute. I heard the show, instantly signed us up, and then had to wait 2 months because it was right in the middle of the Olympics! But once we had our first class, we were hooked and returned the very next day.
Q: Best moment of curling in your life- on or off the ice.
KF: Oh, lots of good moments but at the top would be winning gold at the MoPac Mixed Doubles with my husband in 2019, winning bronze at the Arena National Championships in 2018, hosting Kevin Martin’s clinic in 2019, hosting two NorCal clinics with Darren Moulding, Darah Blandford, and Matt Blandford, and receiving the honor of attending The International Tankard in 2019, which recognizes volunteers within MoPac.
Q: Do you have any personal curling goals for the future?
KF: The goal is to go to ALL the bonspiels. ALL OF THEM. No seriously, ALL OF THEM. My more attainable goal is to continuously promote the sport of curling in Northern California.
Q: Especially in these uncertain times, what does being a curler mean to you?
KF: When I’m on the ice, I think of nothing else but the game I’m in. It’s my way to escape the crazy. Ever since my first game, I’m able to tune out the world for two hours and just think about stones, strategy, and sweeping.
Q: Anything else you'd like folks to know- about yourself, your club, etc?
KF: Registration for The Crush Bonspiel in September is now open! We’re an arena club but our ice is top-notch! Come experience curling in California! Register for "The Crush" HERE.
Thank you, Katie, for your consistent support of the Curler Outreach Program.
Good Curling, Katie, the Feldman family, and Wine Country Curling Club!
